Bobigny: what the neighbourhood is like
Bobigny Pablo-Picasso is the terminus of metro line 5 and one of the busiest transport hubs in the eastern suburbs — metro, tramway T1 and a bus station all in one place. The Seine-Saint-Denis prefecture, the Bobigny 2 shopping centre and the Canal de l'Ourcq shape the neighbourhood.
The IUT and the health campus of Sorbonne Paris Nord are a few minutes away on foot or by T1. Day to day, that means groceries, banking and the pharmacy are all within walking distance, and central Paris is a direct metro ride away, no change.
The area is more functional than lively — for going out, the 19th and 20th arrondissements are about twenty minutes away on line 5. The upcoming Grand Paris Express line 15 will serve Bobigny, which should reshape travel times east and south of the city.

Do I really need to live in Paris to study there?
No, and for plenty of programmes it's actually counterproductive. Paris 8 is in Saint-Denis, Sorbonne Paris Nord teaches in Villetaneuse and Bobigny, Campus Condorcet is in Aubervilliers, Paris Nanterre is in the Hauts-de-Seine, UPEC is in Créteil. A Paris 8 student housed in Saint-Denis is five minutes from lectures; in the 5th arrondissement, they'd face a 45-minute commute and pay €300-400 more per month.
What's the real cost after housing benefit?
Roughly €250-280/month in APL for a student with no income, bringing the monthly cost to about €396-426. This is an estimate — only the CAF confirms your actual entitlement.
Which university is this residence best suited to?
Sorbonne Paris Nord's health campus and its IUT, both five minutes away on foot or by tramway. Campus Condorcet in Aubervilliers is about twenty minutes via metro 5 then metro 12.
Is the RER or metro reliable enough to go out at night?
Metro line 5 runs until around 1:15am on weekdays and 2:15am on Fridays, Saturdays and the night before public holidays. It's a direct, no-change line into central Paris, which makes evenings out noticeably easier than on a residence served only by RER.
Can I share a T2 with a flatmate?
Yes, under a single lease covering the whole unit, at a rate above the €676 studio price — check current availability with the residence. As everywhere in the network, two-room units tend to go early in the booking season.
What's included in the rent?
Water, electricity, heating, fibre, upkeep of shared areas and waste collection tax, no agency fee. You'll still need renter's insurance (about €6/month, mandatory) and a deposit equal to one month's rent excluding charges.
